Great Irish actor Noel Purcell graced many a film and television program with variations of his staple character-- a bearded, boozy son of the Auld Sod. Stage-trained in the classics in Dublin, he moved into films in 1934. His days of prominence, which lasted until the 1970s, began with 1947's \u003cem\u003eCaptain Boycott\u003c\/em\u003e, and peeked with his performance as the elderly salt whose death marooned the lovers-to-be in \u003cem\u003eThe Blue Lagoon\u003c\/em\u003e (1948). He was memorable as William McCoy in \u003cem\u003eMutiny on the Bounty \u003c\/em\u003e(1962); dominant among Captain Ahab's crew in \u003cem\u003eMoby Dick \u003c\/em\u003e(1956); and highly visible as a gamekeeper in \u003cem\u003eThe List of Adrian Messenger\u003c\/em\u003e (1963).
